PEGASUS SOARS A NEW FACE FOR THE DALLAS METROPLEX POSTCARD CLUB Dean Corbitt, September 2005 Pegasus is the winged horse in Greek mythology, sired by gods, ridden by heroes. Symbolizing speed, power and imagination the flying red horse became synonymous with the old Magnolia Petroleum Company, now ExxonMobil. The company was one of the major players in early Dallas history, representing one of the most significant industries in Texas – oil. The Magnolia Building was erected in 1934 as its corporate headquarters. Topping off the landmark structure with a horseshoe footprint is a replica oil derrick supporting a revolving red neon horse. The first lighting of the horse could be seen from sixty miles away. For twenty years the building was the tallest in Dallas. Seven decades later it is still a dominant feature in the skyline. It is the most recognized and endearing symbol for the City of Dallas. A recent renovation of the structure insures a lasting representation by the legendary figure for our community. In 2005 when the Dallas Metroplex Postcard Club wanted a new logo to pump new energy into the club, a board member suggested incorporating Pegasus into the Club image. As the flying horse has long been a source of inspiration for artists, the choice was natural. Now Pegasus continues his aerial flights, morphing himself onto a deckled-edge postcard. A representative mark for any group should reflect the essence of the organization or product. It is repetitive use of the symbol that brings immediate recognition. Capturing the group’s spirit in a tiny image is an exercise blending geometry with illusion on a two dimensional surface. In the design process achieving a magical and memorable mark is forever the elusive pursuit. Pegasus will guide the Club in the elusive pursuits of Deltiology. Dallas artist and Club member Dean Corbitt, www.deancorbitt.com, designed the logo. For more information
